Description

The 2021 farm cash receipts for the District (City of Sudbury and Greater Sudbury) totalled $25.8 million, with $5 million in dairy production and $3.3 million in canola. Soybeans yielded an average of 37 bushels/acre, canola yielded 50 bushels/acre and barley was averaging 83 bushels/acre in 2021. Hay yielded 1.2 ton/acre avg.

Ag Overview

Based on the 2021 Census, there were 260 farms in the District (City of Sudbury and Greater Sudbury. Grain and hay is widely produced. Within Sudbury farms are concentrated in livestock production, while within Greater Sudbury, potato production is of greater importance. Sudbury is also home to the Massey Agricultural Fall Fair, one of the largest agricultural fairs in Northern Ontario.

Climate and Soil

The south of the District lies in climate zone F with an average growing season of 183 days. This zone transitions to G, H & I further north in the district, with an average growing season of 162 days. Sudbury lies within plant hardiness zone 4a & 3b. Soils are typically shallow, stony podzols and have historically been highly acidic and require agricultural lime and tile drainage to be productive.
