Description

The 2021 farm cash receipts for the district totalled $65.7 million, with $24.1 million in dairy production and $10 million in soybeans. Oats produced 113 bushels / acre average in 2021. Canola average yields were 47.2 bushels/acre, hay averaged 1.2 ton/acre and soybeans produced an average of 36.8 bushels/acre.

Ag Overview

Based on the 2021 Census, 321 farms had over 160, 000 acres in production – over half of the operations are valued at over $500,000. Oats and soybeans are typical field crops along with corn, barley and over 30,000 acres in hay. The Ontario Crops Research Centre - New Liskeard is located in the District, with agricultural research focused on agronomy, horticulture and beef, managed by the University of Guelph.

Climate and Soil

The District contains the Ontario section of the Little Claybelt and within the clay zone, the average growing season is 175 days. Further northwest of Lake Temiskaming, the average growing season is 157 days. The District lies within plant hardiness zones 3a & 2b and in climate zones F, G & H. Soils are mostly sandy hummo-ferric podzol soil.
