Ag Overview

Based on the 2016 Census, the District has 162 farms, with the majority between 50-130 acres and predominately focused on livestock production, including cattle & horses, and chicken production. A number of young producers have been entering the industry, focused on intensive, niche agricultural operations. With over 2,000,000 visitors to the district each year, there is a significant market for locally produced food.

Climate and Soil

From May-October 2016, the District experienced an average of 290 mm of precipitation, 1,734 growing degree days and 2,659 crop heat units. Muskoka lies in plant hardiness zone 4a and lies mainly in climate zone E, with some in zone D & F. Soils are largely humo-ferric podzol soils.
